SETAREH X präsentiert Der Tag, an dem die Erde Still steht, eine einzigartigem Ausstellung, in der wichtige Künstler der Düsseldorfer Punkszene in Konversation mit einer neuen Klangskulptur von Pyrolator alias Kurt Dahlke, zu sehen sind. Die Ausstellung ist Teil von Düsseldorf Photo+ und wird mit einer Vernissage am Freitag, den 17. Mai um 18 Uhr eröffnet. Die Künstler werden anwesend sein.

Der Titel Der Tag, an dem die Erde Still Steht stammt von Kurt Dahlkes gleichnamiger Soundarbeitaus dem Jahr 2023. Sie imaginiert einen Tag an dem jeglicher Fortschritt abrupt zum Stillstand kommt. Die Welt scheint in der Kälte des Alls gefroren – einem Nichtraum in dem sich Klang ausdehnt und den Betrachter in nihilistische Dissonanz umhüllt. Dahlke (selbst gebürtiger Düsseldorfer) trägt seit Ende der 1970er Jahre mit den Bands D.A.F, Fehlfarben und einer Gruppe gefährlicher Clowns alias Der Plan unablässig innovativ zur deutschen Musikszene bei. Unter dem Namen Pyrolator schuf er ein umfangreiches Solowerk, in dem er die Grenzen der Klangproduktion mit Hilfe von elektronischen MIDI-Instrumenten und synästhetischen Reaktionen auf die Umgebung auslotet. Zu den letzten Projekten gehören ortsspezifische Installationen für den U-Bahnhof Heinrich-Heine-Allee in Düsseldorf und das neue Hotel Château Royal in Berlin. Diese Ausstellung wird das Debüt seiner neusten Klangskulptur im Rheinland sein.

In Der Tag, an dem die Erde Still steht wird das immersive, räumliche Erlebnis durch eine Vierkanalinstallation realisiert, welche die Quelle und Ausrichtung des Klangs ständig neu autonom konfiguriert. Angetrieben von einem Sampler zieht uns die quadraphonische Lautsprecheranordnung tief in die langen, dissonanten Klangzeichnungen und deren subtile Nuancen hinein. Aus Fragmenten klassischer Komposition entwickelt, erstrecken sich diese Motive rhythmisch und harmonisch in den Horizont der Zeit. Sie erweitern unsere Sinne in Richtung eines Fluchtpunkts.

Für dieses besondere Ausstellungsprojekt wird Der Tag in Konversation mit Bildern und Werken anderer Künstler aus Dahlkes Entwicklungsjahren präsentiert, die sich insbesondere um den berüchtigten Ratinger Hof in Düsseldorf drehen. Von Carmen Knoebel und Ingrid Kohlhöfer betrieben, gilt der Club als Geburtsstätte des deutschen Punk. Er schuf einen Raum für abweichlerischen künstlerischen Ausdruck und multimediale Experimente. Durch die Zusammenführung von Dokumentation und Kunst aus dieser Zeit, kontextualisiert durch die eindringliche Klangkulisse von Dahlkes Mehrkanal-Soundarbeit, blickt die Ausstellung auf Ambitionen dieser utopischen Schaffensperiode in Düsseldorf zurück. Neben dokumentarischen Fotografien des Geschehens im Ratinger Hof aus dem Archiv von Carmen Knoebel zeigen wir Klangarbeiten von Katharina Fritsch, die von Dahlkes Label “Ata Tak“ produziert wurden, eine Dichterlesung-Performance von Martin Kippenberger und Ulrich Meister im Hof, sowie von Knoebel für die DIA Köln und die documenta VII kuratierte Performances mit Dahlke, The Red Crayola, Mittagspause und Babeth Mondini-VanLoo, sowie ein Archiv der von Ata Tak herausgegebenen Alben und Kunstwerke von Moritz Reichelt und Milan Kunc, die beispielhaft für die grafische Respektlosigkeit der Zeit stehen.

Das Ausstellungsprojekt wird von Lee Plested und Maximilian Schäffer co-kuratiert. Eine limitierte Printedition von Der Tag, an dem die Erde Still steht ist in der Galerie erhältlich.

The Day the Earth Stood Still, takes its title from a 2023 sound sculpture by Pyrolator, aka Kurt Dahlke, which imagines a day when progress comes to an abrupt halt, freezing the world in a disarming chill of horizonal dimensions where sound stretches out and surrounds the viewer with nihilistic dissonance. Dahlke, the legendary Düsseldorf native, has consistently made innovative contributions to the German music scene starting in the late 1970s by playing in D.A.F, the post-punk Fehlfarben, and the band known as dangerous clowns, Der Plan. He has also realized a significant body of solo work under the name Pyrolator, where he pushes the boundaries of sonic production through MIDI controlled electronic instruments and acoustically responding to synaesthetic environments. Recent commissions include site specific installations for the Heinrich-Heine-Allee subway station in Düsseldorf and the new Hotel Château Royal in Berlin. Ourpresentation will be the debut of this newest sound sculpture in the Rhineland.

For this special exhibition project, the work will be presented in dialogue with images and other artists’ works from Dahlke’s developmental years, particularly revolving around Düsseldorf’s infamous Ratinger Hof. Often regarded as the birth place of German punk, the bar which was run by Carmen Knoebel and Ingrid Kohlhöfer, created a space for deviant expression and experimentation. By bringing together documentation and art from this period, contextualized bythe lured sound scape of Dahlke’s multichannel sound work, the exhibition will reflect on theambition of this nearly utopian period of creation in Düsseldorf. In addition to documentaryphotographs of the action at Ratinger Hof from the archive of Carmen Knoebel, we will present sound works by Katharina Fritsch produced by Dahlke’s label Ata Tak, a poetry performance by Martin Kippenber-ger and Ulrich Meister at the Hof, performances curated by Knoebel for DIA Köln and documenta VII with Dahlke, The Red Crayola, Mittagspause, and Babeth Mondini-VanLoo, an archive of albums published by Ata Tak, and art works by Moritz Reichelt andMilan Kunc that survey the graphic irreverence which typified this time.

In The Day the Earth Stood Still, an immersive sonic experience is realized through a four-channel installation which continuously reconfigures the source and orientation of the sound. Driven by a sampler to a quadraphonic speaker arrangement, long dissonant lines of sound draw us into their subtle nuances. Evolved from fragments of classical composition, these motives are stretched rhythmically and harmonically out into time’s horizon, extending our senses towards a vanishing point.
