Richard Strauss | Romance in E flat major for clarinet and orchestra / Duet-Concertino for clarinet and bassoon
Peter I. Tchaikovsky | Symphony No. 6 in B minor op. 74 "Pathétique"
The "Artist in Residence" chosen by the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt for this season loves changing perspectives: sometimes he sits in the middle of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as principal clarinettist, sometimes he indulges in folk music with friends. Tonight, Matthias Schorn makes two gems from Richard Strauss' late works shine. In the dreamy Romance, he can pull out all the vocal stops on his clarinet before being joined by Hyunjin Kim on bassoon in the Duet Concertino. Last works are not always so cheerfully relaxed, as Tchaikovsky's melancholy and tragic "Pathétique" shows - it became a poignant swan song due to the composer's death shortly after its premiere in 1893.
