Until recently, her name was only known to insiders. Yet the composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) was considered an illustrious celebrity throughout Europe during her lifetime. One of her most successful orchestral works, the "Faust" overture, sets the mood for an evening dedicated entirely to Romanticism. Another Romantic par excellence is the internally torn, endangered border crosser Robert Schumann, whose cello concerto resembles an unsparing self-portrait. This extreme solo part is tailor-made for Anastasia Kobekina - a cellist who always goes all out. Franz Schubert's work is also the result of an almost "Faustian" struggle. His C major Symphony deserves its nickname in every respect - with it, Schubert finally succeeded in paving the way for the great symphony and stepping out of Beethoven's shadow.
