In this melodrama, shot in magnificent colors and in widescreen format, Yoshida worked together for the first time with actress Mariko Okada, who later became his working and life partner. A soldier returning from the Second World War recovers from tuberculosis in an inn near a healing spring and is cared for by the innkeeper's daughter. The love story that develops between the increasingly cynical intellectual and Shingko, who persistently believes in love, spans 17 years and yet is never fulfilled. Instead, a gradual disillusionment emerges: with love, but also with life's dreams, ideas and political concepts.
