Artist Talk with Héctor Velázquez Gutiérrez

Héctor Velázquez Gutiérrez was born in Mexico City in 1965. He studied sculpture in Mexico, Stuttgart and Berlin. He has received various grants and awards for his work, including from the Mexican Ministry of Culture and the Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn. His works include an invitation to an "intervention" in the room for pre-Hispanic art at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin in 2004. In 2017, he created two sculptures for the church of St. Christophorus in Neukölln as part of the "Art in the Church" project. Héctor Velázquez Gutiérrez has shown his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad (Mexico, France, Malta, Germany, Hong Kong, USA, Spain). Solo exhibitions include "Especulaciones Organicas" at the Museo Textil de Oaxaca / Mexico City in 2023.
He has been a member of the Milchhof studio community since 2021.

Héctor Velázquez Gutiérrez deals with the relationship of the human body to its environment. This concerns the body forms themselves, sensory perceptions, self-perception and communication with others. In his works, he examines the physical and psychological relationships between topographical maps and the human body, the skin and the clothing that covers it. Using various materials such as fabrics, threads, worn clothing and stones, he creates works that invite the viewer to become physically and emotionally involved.
