Lecture by Thomas Schenker
Thomas was not yet born when his aunt and uncle fulfilled their dream and emigrated to Australia. Grandma and Grandpa followed, the Australian cousins grew, and so even as a small child he felt a special connection to the continent on the other side of the world, as almost half of his family lived there. After school, Thomas also moved to Australia for a while to do his community service there. Various trips with different people followed and Thomas has now spent almost two years in total "Down Under", as the Australians call their homeland.
After Thomas had driven along the white sandy beaches of Fraser Island on the east coast of Australia in a borrowed Toyota Landcruiser, he realized that he needed an off-road vehicle if he wanted to discover more of these dreamy places, as some of the country's most beautiful spots cannot be reached on paved roads, making the journey there an adventure in itself. On dirt roads - as the Aussies call them - which are often only passable with off-road vehicles due to the frequent river crossings, the beautiful east coast and the picturesque Great Ocean Road are still passable with any car, but on the sparsely populated west coast, in the outback in the heart of Australia and in the tropical north, the so-called Top End, it pays off that all four wheels on Thomas' off-road vehicle are individually driven. But despite his off-road vehicle, Thomas gets stuck several times and the Aussies, known for their openness and willingness to help, have to rescue him from a tricky situation more than once before the tide returns and the car falls victim to the waves.
Come along on an adventurous journey along the edges and through the heart of the red continent and discover an extraordinary country with Thomas on an extraordinary journey. Where locals carry little baby kangaroos around in their rucksacks and raise them with a bottle or keep huge crocodiles in their gardens, where you can clamber through imposing canyons in the oldest rocks in the world, where dolphins eat the fish out of your hand, where you can stand in knee-deep water just 20 meters in front of you and watch meter-high waves rise up and crash onto the sharp reef right in front of you, where daring surfers try their luck, where Aborigines go to collect mangrove crabs and sometimes try to catch a crocodile if it crosses their path.... where the freedom is indescribable, the sunsets are breathtaking and the campfire nights under the stars are beautiful.
With almost two years of Australian experience on several trips, Thomas is happy to give tips for your own trip down under. G'day!
