Texts from the cycle of poems by Marianna Kijanowska translated from Ukrainian by Claudia Dathe

In Babyn Yar, a ravine near Kiev, more than 33,000 Kiev Jews were shot by German policemen, SS men, members of the Wehrmacht and local militiamen within 48 hours at the end of September 1941. The Ukrainian poet Marianna Kijanowska transforms the here and now of those two endless days into a present that will not fade away.
The 67 poems in her cycle, the "Voices", are fictional testimonies of Kiev citizens who were driven through the streets, but also of others who stood at the window or heard the shots from afar.

Especially in our current times, we must remain vigilant against a strengthening right-wing. These haunting texts drastically demonstrate where a right-wing, inhuman attitude can lead.
