BAMAKO Abderrahmane Sissako F/Mali/USA 2006 Bambara and French OmeU 118'
The courtyard of a house in Bamako becomes the courtroom of a fictitious trial conducted by the citizens of the capital of Mali against the neo-colonial "structural adjustment" policies of the World Bank, the IMF and other international donors, as well as the policies of African governments. The process shares the cinematic space with a western and other narrative components. With his allusive, self-reflexive film, Abderrahmane Sissako created an early example of the "tribunalism" that would soon make the rounds between theaters and contemporary art.
