Moderated concert in German, in cooperation with the German Chamber Orchestra Berlin
You will hear:
Here, pieces by Alban Berg and Béla Bartók meet Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto, presented by the German Chamber Orchestra in the Church of St. Elisabeth.
Both Alban Berg and Béla Bartók were in contact with numerous Bauhaus members and were regular guests at the Bauhaus. They were part of musical modernism, which broke away from the prevailing rules and proclaimed the equality and "liberation" of all sounds. Similar to the Bauhaus in the field of design, the composers no longer accepted traditional certainties in music either.
In apparent contrast to this is the form-bound music of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was, however, an important point of reference for many Bauhaus members and the musical avant-garde. It was precisely the strict form of the fugue, of which Bach is considered the master, that the avant-garde found liberating.
Conductor: Karl-Heinz Steffens
Moderation: Kai Hinrich Müller

Moderated concert in German in cooperation with Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin.
You will hear:
On Friday evening, works by Alban Berg and Béla Bartók will be performed alongside Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, presented by the Deutsches Kammerorchester in the Church of St Elisabeth.
Both Alban Berg and Béla Bartók maintained close contacts with numerous members of the Bauhaus and were regular guests at the school. They pioneered modernist trends in music which disregarded musical conventions and called for the equal treatment and "liberation" of all tones. Similar to the field of design at the Bauhaus, these composers questioned the validity of any and all time-honored certainties in music.
The meticulously structured music of Johann Sebastian Bach stands in stark contrast to these modern compositions. However, Bach was a role model for many members of the Bauhaus and the musical avant-garde who found the formal stringency of Bach's masterful fugues especially liberating.
