Buzz' Ayaz come from Nicosia, the divided capital of Cyprus, and bring a fresh breeze of Eastern Mediterranean psychedelic, rock and blues to the stage. A dynamic offbeat groove, emanating from tribal-like drumming and heavy bass clarinet riffs, creates a dark, trance-like reverie. At the same time, an alert, sparkling energy pervades the sharp, surprising arrangements. The result is an urban soundscape of synthesizer textures and dub electronica, 70s psych organ echoes, fat beats and microtonal Anatolian melodies.

The folk element runs deep in everyone's veins, together they create a contemporary mosaic from this colorful palette, a 21st century sonic universe with a strong local identity and flavor. A modern reflection of place, politics, geography and the fluctuations of light and shadow in the soul of turbulent Nicosia, a melting pot of Greek, Turkish and other cultures. The members of the band - all activists themselves - come from both sides of the city. Their coming together is a conscious attempt to create a musical body that gives the whole city a voice that can be heard beyond the walls and checkpoints on a borderless island.

Buzz' Ayaz is a project led by Antonis Antoniou - founder of the bands Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke. The debut album was released in April. Listen to it. Come along.
