Based on a 40-volume novel series about the nihilistic samurai and gifted swordsman Ryunosuke Tsukue, who kills cold-heartedly, is excluded from the community and then seeks revenge, the material has been filmed again and again in Japanese film history. Misumi's version, the first part of a trilogy, was realized for the first time in widescreen format and in color. As in Misumi's sword film trilogy, Raizo Ichikawa shines in the leading role in this action-packed and virtuously staged genre film.
