Das fehlende Puzzleteil. Objekte, Herkunftsgeschichten, Schicksale

In the organizer's words:

What do we actually know about the objects in our museum collection? When did they come to the museum? Whose property were they previously? And are there perhaps even cultural assets that were illegally added to the collection? It is not always possible to reconstruct all of this straight away. For the first time, the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig is showing how such a search for the missing piece of the puzzle to clarify the origin, the so-called provenance, works in its own exhibition.

Since 2019, the museum has been working intensively on provenance research with the help of funding from the German Lost Art Foundation (Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste), in particular the systematic search for looted property from the National Socialist era in its own collections. The results of the extensive research to date are presented in the studio exhibition on the basis of cases. In addition, the museum's associated handling of both unobjectionable and critical provenances will be discussed. Works of art purchased from the auction house Hans Klemm, the donation of the pencil drawing "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy on his deathbed" by the German-American pianist Franz Rupp and the purchases from the estates of the Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Wach families, among others, play a central role here. These examples show how the works came into the collection and the fates and stories behind the objects.

The exhibition is complemented by a varied program of events and a booklet accompanying the exhibition.

The exhibition is funded by the German Lost Art Foundation as part of the research project.
