Das Rauschen des Kosmos. Sandra Vásquez de la Horra Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis 2023 | Führung für gehörlose Besucher*innen mit Übersetzung in DGS

In the organizer's words:

The Chilean artist Sandra Vásquez de la Horra will be awarded the Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2023. To mark the award ceremony, the Akademie der Künste is showing a selection of her works, which can be seen at Hanseatenweg from June 19 to August 25, 2024. Over 60 drawings, photographs and objects unfold in a site-specific installation.

In her work, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra addresses conflicts that are currently preoccupying us worldwide. Her works combine archetypes of our collective consciousness, taboos, gender issues and sexuality, intercultural reflections and questions of spiritual practice. She uses dreams, the subconscious and memories to create a poetic visual world between the imaginary and the real, with human existence at its center.

De la Horra grew up at a time when her native Chile was dominated by torture, abductions and human rights violations following the military junta's coup in 1973. The history of Chile has influenced her drawings, sculptures and installations just as much as her own family history, the mythologies of the indigenous population and the colonial rule of European countries in Central and South America.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with texts by Ulrike Grossarth and Siegfried Zielinski.

The Käthe Kollwitz Prize has been co-financed by the Kreissparkasse Köln, sponsor of the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne, since 1992.
