The once flourishing small town of Güllen is impoverished after the unexpected closure of its largest factory. Hopes are pinned on the imminent visit of the wealthy Claire Zachanassian, who grew up in Güllen. To put her in a giving mood, Claire's former lover, the car dealer Alfred, is sent ahead, and at the evening welcome banquet Claire brusquely cuts short all diplomatic efforts to show her generosity: she knows that Güllen is in need and will help the town with two billion euros. But she won't sign the check until Alfred dies. The villagers indignantly reject this condition and rally behind Alfred. But eventually the reasons for Claire's murderous offer become known. Gradually, the mood changes and Alfred has to fear for his life...
