Der Tunnelbauer

In the organizer's words:

After the construction of the Berlin Wall, student Achim makes a difficult decision: he flees East Berlin and does everything he can to help people from the GDR to escape. Together with other helpers, he digs tunnels from West to East Berlin - in constant fear of being discovered.

The book "Der Tunnelbauer" (Gerstenberg Verlag) is based on the true story of contemporary witness Joachim Neumann, who helped with the world-famous escape through Tunnel 57 in Bernauer Strasse in October 1964. Together with Joachim "Achim" Neumann, author Maja Nielsen will read from the book at the Berlin Wall Memorial.

• Joachim Neumann fled to West Berlin on December 21, 1961 with a false Swiss passport. There he was involved in a total of six tunnel projects, including Tunnel 29 and Tunnel 57.
• Maja Nielsen is an author and trained actress. Her successful "Abenteuer!" series published by Gerstenberg Verlag has won numerous awards.
