On this socio-political city tour, we set off with our guide Mohammed Chahrour, himself a child of Sonnenallee, in search of traces of the past and present of this street and the people who live and work here.

Four Blocks, Gaza Strip in Germany, little Damascus, no-go area: there are plenty of associations with Sonnenallee in Neukölln. It is worth taking a differentiated look at the street, the western part of which is seen as more Arab than almost any other place in Germany. Whether bakeries, hairdressers, electrical stores, wedding stores, shisha shops, travel agencies or snack bars: They offer their products and services in Arabic.

But how did this street become such a lively commercial center with an Arab character? Why did Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians settle here at different times? What obstacles did they face from the state? And what are the current challenges facing Sonnenallee?
