The outer plot of this modern gangster tale is quite simple: during her stay in Paris, the young Danish au pair Odile discovers a pile of banknotes in her master's open closet. She casually tells a friend at language school, who in turn informs Arthur, a young man with an uncontrollable tendency towards gangsterism. Before the dashing Odile becomes an involuntary accomplice to the robbery, they roam the city together. But the trio don't get along as planned, and the planned coup doesn't work out either. In their search for money, freedom and love, the outsiders are capable of and destined for nothing but failure.

Godard, who comments on the events himself from off-screen, uses experimental cuts and unusual shots to create one of his loosest and most ironic films. Some moments are now firmly anchored in the canon of cult scenes in film history. For example, the characters walk through the Louvre in Paris in world record time or spontaneously perform a cool dance. In addition to the artistic camera work, Anna Karina's performance underlines Godard's statement that "all you need for a good movie is a girl and a revolver".
