Democracy has to be learned and fought for again and again; just wanting it is not enough. The psychologist Marina Weisband, born in Kiev in 1987 ("What carries us through the crisis: a conversation between generations" and "Ask us! - A Jew and a Jew tell us about their lives") is convinced that democracy promotion cannot start early enough and notes that our schools are not well positioned in this respect. Instead of offering scope for creativity and promoting independence, young people fall into a state of learned helplessness - an ideal gateway for extremism and populism.
In her latest book Die neue Schule der Demokratie. Thinking Wilder, Acting Effectively, Weisband argues that democracy must be the foundation of everything, in schools and in society.
