Rents are constantly being increased and have long since outpaced income growth. People on low incomes hardly have a chance of finding affordable housing in the big cities. At the same time, funds and listed companies are speculating with the common property of housing and land, housing remains a profitable investment object, and if tenants threaten the business, they have to fear being let out.
The traffic light government has neglected the issue. The promised social tenancy law has not materialized and there is a lack of suitable funding for the social and ecological refurbishment of housing stock. And the new non-profit housing scheme, which is intended to enable public and non-profit housing companies to create affordable housing in the long term, has also failed.
Based on local projects and initiatives, we want to discuss what housing policy changes are needed for tenants, how actors oriented towards the common good and communal forms of housing can be promoted and how we can overcome the challenge of making the building stock socially and climate-friendly for the future.
In discussion with the audience: Caren Lay (MdB), Jule Nagel (MdL) & Nina Treu from the party Die Linke as well as activists from various district initiatives from the east of Leipzig.
