The exhibition "Against the Current. The Omaha, Francis La Flesche and His Collection" is the result of a multi-year collaboration between teachers and students of the Nebraska Indian Community College and a team of curators from Berlin. Its central starting point is a collection of objects that was put together at the end of the 19th century by Francis La Flesche (1857-1932) on behalf of the Ethnological Museum Berlin.

Francis La Flesche is regarded as the first indigenous ethnologist in North America. With him, the exhibition highlights a personality who is representative of numerous Indigenous actors without whom ethnological research and collecting could not have taken place. His life and work are inextricably linked to the history of the oppression of the indigenous population of North America and can only be understood against this background.

What significance does the collection have for Umóⁿhoⁿ today? How do they view their past and what characterizes their way of life today?

The guided tour of the exhibition sheds light on the colonial-historical context of the creation of Francis La Flesche's collection, goes into his biography and provides insights into the perspectives of members of the Umóⁿhoⁿ on their history and culture.
