EMIKA - HaZe Night *live

Emika is coming to the Gretchen with her latest album "Haze".

Emika has her own sound and goes her own way. She has been producing electronic and neo-classical music since the turn of the millennium, combining her skills as a sound designer, classically trained composer and prolific singer and songwriter. "Haze" sounds like a mixture of Thom Yorke, Burial and Nils Frahm, colorfully swirled and yet as if from a single source. It's all there, the neoclassical, descending melodies, the characteristically breathy vocals, the icy pianos, the heavy sub-basses and the layered hazy beats. You could call it a loving relationship with Future Garage.

Her creativity comes from a variety of sources. She started making music early on with a 4-track cassette recorder, combining classical piano, electronics and sampling techniques. She later studied Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University. In Bristol, she immersed herself in the bass music scene and was inspired by trip-hop and the emerging dubstep movement. This was followed by a move to Berlin, where she worked as a sound designer for Native Instruments. Her first two albums "Emika" (2011) and "Dva" (2013) were released by Ninja Tune. To date, she has released eight critically acclaimed albums and has been working independently with her own label "Emika Records" since 2015.

"Haze" is the product of a period of upheaval in Emika's life. In early 2022, she moved from Berlin to the Black Forest. She sat between moving boxes surrounding her piano in an unfurnished, empty-sounding room. She had voice memo recordings of her piano and her voice on her phone, which she mixed with headphones on her laptop. Little Ableton loops, lyrics, sadness and melodies. The album is beautiful and we are looking forward to the show that goes with it. Don't miss.
