Ernst ist das Leben (Bunbury)

The privileged life of a gentleman with all its obligations is a burden for Jack and Algernon. Where is there room for vice? It has to be found! So Jack invents his dissolute brother Ernst and Algy his sick friend Bunbury. Ernst leads a lottery life in the city, while Bunbury languishes in the country. So Jack flees the country to save his brother, slipping into his role and enjoying his debauchery as Ernst himself. Algy, on the other hand, escapes the city to "bunbury" in the country. In an attempt to free themselves, the two dandies get closer and become entangled in a ludicrous dilemma. Jack proposes to Algy's cousin Gwendolen, but realizes how important it is for her to marry someone called Ernst. Meanwhile, Algy sneaks into Jack's country estate and pretends to be Ernst. He falls in love with Jack's ward Cecily, for whom the name Ernst is also the most important factor in her choice of partner.
