In the opening program, the West Berlin artist group Die Tödliche Doris sets the tone with the 1983 Super 8 film NATURKATASTROPHENKONZERT. In her film ARSENAL FILMARCHIV 20.12.2022, Ute Aurand moves from one shelf to another with a 16 mm camera. A narrative emerges from the labels on the film boxes that could have gone one way or another.
After the greeting, we continue with BRUCE LEE IN THE LAND OF BALZAC by Maria Thereza Alves. Bruce Lee's martial arts screams are transformed into the beauty of French landscapes described by Balzac. In THE SOUND OF THE DEPTH OF THE SEA, Sudanese filmmaker Ibrahim Shaddad, who has been living in exile in Cairo since 2023, recounts a dream one afternoon at the Swiss Club. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! by Monika Kin Gagnon is based on a cassette recording of a child's birthday party in 1970. The motor of a 16 mm camera can be heard in the background while a father instructs his daughter to mark the takes on a 16 mm film, the images of which are now lost. For their documentary KASSIEREN, Amelie Vierbuchen, Franca Pape and Lea Sprenger set out in search of archive material about the Kalk chemical plant in Cologne, including a 16-mm film whose handling poses a challenge for the archivist. KASSIEREN is a film about the resistance of the material, about throwing it away, gaps in the archive and about one's own inability. The sound recordings for LA CHARNIÈRE by Antoine Bonfanti were made during a discussion after the screening of Mario Marret and Chris Marker's À bientôt, j'espère (1967), in which the workers expressed their dissatisfaction with how they were portrayed in the film. Marker then suggested giving them the cameras, which was seen as the origin of the Medvekine groups. Finally, KATASUMBIKA (2024), the new film by Petna Ndaliko Katondolo, reflects on what was left out of the colonial project and its legacy in eastern Congo, based on personal memories. Will the sounds of indigenous resistance be heard as we continue to follow the thread of history, the chain of exploitation of natural resources and the course of violence?
