Pilau, chapati and chai - the food cultures of the East African coast are an exemplary expression of transcontinental interaction and shared histories. Spices, ingredients and dishes have traveled and continue to travel across the Ziwa Kuu, Afrasian Sea or Indian Ocean for generations. The cultural association UWATAB (Umoja wa Watanzania Berlin-Brandenburg) offers a special opportunity to experience Tanzania's multifaceted cuisine and engage in conversation with one another.

Okey in Turkey, dominoes in Cuba and mahjong in China, playing is a fundamental human need and an integral part of every social configuration. Bao (Kiswahili for "board"), for example, is the most widespread board game in Tanzania, played at tea stalls, in pubs, on street corners, at home or on the road, and it inspires and emotionalizes.

Tables in the foyer invite visitors to try it out for themselves, with fundi (Kiswahili for "teacher") breaking down the complexity, passing on their intergenerational knowledge of the game and - at the very least - providing a small insight into this game culture.

PARTICIPANTS

The association Umoja wa Watanzania Berlin Brandenburg e.V. (UWATAB) unites the Tanzanian diaspora in Berlin and Brandenburg and supports its members in preserving their cultural identity while actively participating in social life in Germany. Through cultural events and festivals such as the Tanzanian unity and independence celebrations, it strengthens the feeling of togetherness and offers a platform for networking.

The association promotes exchange between people from Tanzania and people in Germany who are interested in Tanzania, thus contributing to a lively dialog with German society. In addition, UWATAB helps new arrivals from Tanzania to find their feet in Germany. In 2024, the association is part of the program weekend at the Humboldt Forum, where the members arrange Bao workshops, offer Tanzanian food and are part of the discussion program.
