The big city shimmers in the colorful light of the house fronts and in the bustle of the crowd Jakob Fabian wanders disoriented through the seething Berlin of the interwar period. In the midst of a society that takes refuge in the magic of the feverishly lit night instead of facing the reality of the day, the self-proclaimed moralist works as an advertising copywriter and discusses his own political resignation with his friend Labude. Briefly, he and his girlfriend Cornelia lose themselves in the hope of a tomorrow, but with each passing day the illusions fade, every utopia seems futile and the future uncertain. Fabian meets figures who know how to assert themselves as viable in the shaky world edifice, but remains himself incapable of putting his feet firmly on the ground or designing a different world. Meanwhile, under the glass bell jar of Europe, the air becomes thinner and thinner and the only direction points downhill.

Kästner's immediately striking language meets contemporary texts that react to Kästner's masterpiece almost a century after its publication and take a new look at the provisional Europe. The world theater plays on - and its protagonist still doesn't know whose world is coming to an end here and whether he is invited as a spectator or an actor.
