Not so long ago, there was actually a case where a journalist was almost driven to suicide by the social media hounding. In Antje Rávik Strubel's astonishing new novel "The Influence of Pheasants", which is completely out of line with her other works, it is a journalist who is confronted with the news that her reporting in a MeToo case may have been responsible for a suicide. The astonishing thing is that Antje Rávik Strubel is familiar with heavy topics, but not with this tone. Her new novel is ironic, sometimes cynical and always with a wit that amazes. Perhaps the appropriate literary attitude to the loss of control of the media's spirals of excitement?
In any case, one thing was clear: a journalist must talk to the author about this novel. Preferably one who has an overview of the change in the journalistic ethos towards an increasingly derailing click-rat pressure. And at the same time knows how complex the requirements for neutral reporting have become when an editorial team is being held hostage by the uninhibited prejudgement of social media. She discusses with Bettina Böttinger what else prompted Antje Rávik Strubel to write her novel and its change of tone, and perhaps also reveals what pheasants have to do with the media's delight in scandalization.
