Our film series "Fascination True Crime" features the film that Peter Jackson made between his fun splatter hits and "Lord of the Rings" - with Kate Winslet in her first cinema role:
HEAVENLY CREATURES
NZL/GBR/DEU 1994. dir: Peter Jackson. D: Melanie Lynskey, Kate Winslet, Sarah Peirse. 108 min. EnglOmdtU. FSK: 16
Teenagers Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme (Kate Winslet in her first movie role!) are always together, develop fantasy worlds to combat the boredom of their lives, have a crush on opera singer Mario Lanza and actor Orson Welles, in short: they are best friends. Or even more? In New Zealand in the mid-1950s, homosexuality is considered a mental illness that needs to be cured. The parents decide to separate the two - and Pauline develops a murderous plan.
On June 22, 1954, the friends beat Pauline's mother to death - she had forbidden her daughter to emigrate to South Africa with Juliet. Peter Jackson, who had previously made fun splatter films and would go on to create the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, became internationally renowned with this sensitive teenage crime drama - he won the Golden Lion in Venice.
