Jean-Baptiste Grenouille has an exceptional talent: he has by far the best nose in all of France and can sniff out millions of scents with extreme precision. When perfumer Giuseppe Baldini discovers him one day and makes him a journeyman, Grenouille learns the perfumer's trade from the ground up. However, he soon realizes that Baldini's resources are limited. So he sets off for the perfume capital of Grasse to learn a technique for preserving all fragrances. His ultimate goal: to capture the most wonderful fragrance in the world. However, his work takes a dark turn when he becomes interested in the smells of people and the scent of Antoine Richi's daughter Laure begins to seduce him.
