An opera for the Elector for the anniversary of "300 years of Carl Theodor": "Beauty and the Beast" in opera form - the enchanted Prince Azor lives a lonely life in his palace in the form of a terrible beast, until one day a strange merchant disturbs his peace. As punishment, the intruder is to sacrifice his daughter Zemira to the monster. She soon discovers that Azor's animal shell conceals a human being...
Grétry's originally French opera was "Italianized" at the court of Carl Theodor and celebrated its premiere in Mannheim in 1776. Bernhard Forck and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, together with director, set and costume designer Nigel Lowery, bring this very special Schwetzingen version of ZEMIRA E AZOR to life on the stage of the Schlosstheater Schwetzingen.
