From September 1, 2024 to March 9, 2025, numerous Mannheim institutions will use the exhibition "The New Objectivity - A Centennial Anniversary" at the Kunsthalle Mannheim as an opportunity to offer events under the motto "The 1920s in Mannheim". Cinema Quadrat is also part of this major cultural project with numerous film evenings.
We are opening the film series, which looks back on the 1920s with special programs and numerous (silent) films, with a reception and two films in the presence of film critic and filmmaker Rüdiger Suchsland:
FROM CALIGARI TO HITLER
DEU 2016. D: Rüdiger Suchsland. Documentary. 119 min. FSK: 0
Caligari, Mabuse, Nosferatu: the demonic canvas of the Weimar Republic was full of such eerie and fascinating figures. Siegfried Kracauer based his thesis on them: that these screen characters psychologically paved the way for Hitler. Rüdiger Suchsland takes Siegfried Kracauer as his travel companion on a tour through the cinema of the Weimar era: an epoch of modernity in which German cinematic art was the greatest in the world and in which, at the same time, society's inner turmoil was already inherent.
With film discussion with Rüdiger Suchsland and small reception
Followed by a lecture by Rüdiger Suchsland on the films of New Objectivity
SECRETS OF A SOUL
DEU 1926. D: Georg Wilhelm Pabst. D. Werner Krauß, Ruth Weiher, Jack Trevor. Silent movie with live music. 35mm projection. 62 min. FSK: n. A.
When chemist Martin Fellmann learns that his wife's cousin has returned from India, he is haunted by bizarre, terrifying nightmares - and the next day finds it hard to resist the temptation to stab his wife with the Indian dagger the returnee has brought with him. A psychiatrist analyzes Fellmann's dream and his knife phobia. Pabst uses a variety of cinematic techniques to depict the mental anguish of the protagonist and create a "psychoanalytical film". He was advised by the psychoanalysts Karl Abraham and Hanns Sachs.
We are showing the film in analog 35m projection.
