The 1970 film YOU HIDE ME has been remade by director Nii Kwate Owoo. This version is based on the restored 16mm original negative and was made possible through a collaboration between Arsenal, the BFI and Nii Kwate Owoo. Owoo is currently working on sound versions in several African languages, supplemented by a second part that was filmed a few weeks ago during the loan of artifacts from British museums to Ghana.

YOU HIDE ME was filmed over 50 years ago and presented to the public for the first time the hundreds of thousands of art treasures from the Asante Islands that were stolen by the British colonial power after the Sagrenti War and the invasion of Kumasi by Field Marshal Garnet Woseley in the 1870s, as well as other art treasures looted by the British Expeditionary Force. In 1970, Ghanaian filmmaker Nii Kwate Owoo managed to trick the British Museum's directors and security system to gain access to the secret underground vaults and film the valuable African artifacts stored there. A single day was all it took to make this short film, which reveals the extent of the theft of African artworks stashed in plastic bags and wooden crates - a plea for their return.
