Freshly pressed
- a series of window displays by the Cologne Graphikwerkstatt
Color woodcuts by Karin Flau
The woodcut is the oldest printing process. Whether image and text pages in books, posters, playing cards - the material was familiar in its processing and was a suitable starting point for the art of printing.
Karin Flau develops her prints in a combination of reduction cutting and the printing of several color plates. The surfaces are held in place by the final contour plate.
Color variations mean that not every print is the same.
In this way, original planning and spontaneity complement each other to create something unique.
The structure of the wood offers the artist a resistance with which she has to work, but which she finds attractive at the same time.
The naturalness of wood as a printing block cannot be surpassed. Wood as a material connects the artist with nature.
Perhaps this is precisely where the deep joy lies, the approach with all the senses, which has made woodcuts the traditionally most frequently used technique in printmaking.
Since 2012, Karin Flau has concentrated her work at the Kölner Graphikwerkstatt on letterpress printing and in particular on woodcuts.
A selection of her works will be on display from September 13 to October 4 in the shop window of the Kölner Graphikwerkstatt.
Showcase talks can be arranged.
