Gringo Mayer & Die Kegelband

Let's get that out of the way right away: He's absolutely serious! So just in case there were any doubts. Gringo Mayer from Ludwigshafen is a gifted performer, a captivating interpreter of his music, an absolute showman and of course: this man has an outstandingly smug sense of humor straight from the middle of life.

But Gringo Mayer is no Klamaukbarde, no novelty act. What he sings and what he writes means nothing less than everything to him, otherwise he wouldn't be able to sing his songs with such incomparable fervor.

On his upcoming third album "Laav", this becomes clearer than ever before. Let's take the first single from the album, "Nobody Like You": It happened last January, Gringo Mayer was sitting in Tenerife working on new songs. For him, the surreally beautiful nature of the island stood in stark contrast to the chronic overload that we are all exposed to in the midst of an increasingly rapid succession of crises: Climate, pandemic, wars, fake news, inflation - you can't take it all in your head anymore.

"Niemand ist wie du" begins with indie rock guitars, a wistful keyboard melody and finally the familiar voice: "Doktor, Doktor/I just can't find any peace/Überall schepperts und ich merke keine Besserung", sings Gringo Mayer - and we have to write this down in High German for a change, although he sings it in Kurpfälzer dialect, of course, because these lines are so important.

The protagonist of "Niemand ist wie du" is slowly going mad because bad news is constantly coming at him from everywhere. In this situation, the song's refrain becomes a kind of mantra for him: "Nobody's like you", a kind of higher authority assures him, "I love you/I can't help it."

"Maybe I'm being overdramatic, but I increasingly have the impression that the world as a whole has become more restless," says Gringo. "And when I came to Tenerife to calm down a bit myself, I realized more and more what that does to people. With this song, I wanted to convey a sense of peace, a musical respite."

And so, with this wonderfully seductive melody, "Niemand ist wie du" now combines the escapism of a balmy summer night on Tenerife with longing, lots of love and comfort. "Maybe it will help some people to deal better with all these crises and wars," says Gringo, "because you just feel constantly helpless, powerless and overwhelmed and that doesn't help anyone in the long run."

On his new album "Laav", Gringo Mayer makes profoundly wonderful music that you can use to lift yourself up - the first single "Niemand wie du" is the best proof of this.

It will be a terrific year for Gringo Mayer in general: after a celebrated tour of Germany in spring 2024 and appearances at Das Fest and the Haldern Pop Festival, Gringo will embark on a major tour with the Kegelband from January 17, 2025. It will be a celebration of life, love and constructive cohesion.
