The lecture will shed some important historical light on the relationship between Rome and Germany. In the background is the difficult definition of the relationship between the universal church and particular churches with its diverse ecclesiopolitical, cultural and theological implications. Currently, it is particularly interesting to take a look at the impulse towards a synodal church emanating from the World Synod in comparison with the synodal path in Germany. Where are the lines of conflict? How can there be mutual enrichment?

Annette Schavan is a German politician and theologian. She was Federal Research Minister, Member of the Bundestag, Vice-Chairwoman of the CDU and visiting professor in China. From 2014 to 2018, she was the German ambassador to the Holy See.
