Iris
Irene Höfer, Anke Sterneborg / Germany / 2023 / 52 min. / German premiere
She is the grande dame of German and international cinema, always a bit of a rocker chick, freedom-loving, adventurous and willing to take risks. This portrait unfolds Iris Berben's career, which has spanned more than five decades, between the art of film and television, between rock 'n' roll and political commitment, told as a dialog between past and present, memory and presence.
Iris Berben returns to important places in her life and meets formative and inspiring accomplices: Rudolf Thome, with whom she made her first two feature films. Jim Rakete, who has been photographing her continuously for 40 years. Barbara Sukowa, who, like her, started out as an actress in Munich, but with Fassbinder. Marius Müller-Westernhagen, with whom she shares a passion for rock'n roll as a way of life. Sherry Hormann, who cast her as the ghost of her own mother in "Anleitung zum Unglücklichsein" and challenged her to a furious Lola opening dance, only to explore her once again in a completely new light in the ZDF two-parter "Altes Land". Anke Engelke, with whom she has long been associated, in the shared privilege of being able to switch between comedy and serious roles. Numan Acar, with whom she was in front of the camera in the Netflix production "Paradise". Ruben Östlund, who led her to a late triumph in "Triangle of Sadness", with a role in which she speaks only a single sentence, but in many tones and emotional states. IRIS is a thoughtful look back, in the form of a collage of photos and moving images, in a dialog between then and now.
