Changes Ensemble

The Changes Ensemble plays selected compositions by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Steve Swallow and Bill Evans. "Playing changes" means not only playing out the usual jazz term for chord changes, but also changing the dynamics of one's own playing when working together in a band.

"If there is one musician in jazz history to whom the saying "solitaire" applies, then it is Thelonious "Sphere" Monk. A man with an erratic personality, this pianist, who was born in 1917 and died in 1982, created an oeuvre of compositions in just a few years, many of which occupy an exceptional position in the canon of modern jazz - such as "Round Midnight" or "Well You Needn't". Although (or precisely because?) many of Monk's themes, with their short riffs, their counter-brushed rhythms, their non-conformist accents and their quirky, dissonant harmonization, seem to reflect the hermetic nature of their composer, they have nevertheless become firmly anchored in the consciousness of the jazz public," writes Martin Laurentius.
