Jembaa Groove: A floating mix of Afro-soul, highlife, jazz and funk.
Jembaa Groove, founded in 2020 by Yannick Nolting and Eric Owusu, combines West African influences such as highlife, Adowa and Wassoulou with soul, jazz, reggae and funk. On two albums to date, the seven-piece band celebrates life and community with warm melodies, positive lyrics, lively rhythms and plenty of groove. Live, they bring an intoxicating mix of tight arrangements and spontaneous improvisational joy to the stage, full of dreamy horn sections, rousing guitars and heavenly vocals.
The formation consists of former band members of Tony Allen, Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas and Orlando Julius. Decades of playing and recording with these legends of highlife and Afrobeat have shaped their sound. Jembaa Groove manages the feat of developing these rich influences into their own musical identity and combining them with contemporary jazz, funk, neo-soul and hip-hop sounds. A melting pot of influences that they blend together to create a contemporary interpretation of highlife, jazz and soul.
Jembaa Groove have established themselves as an international touring band in recent years, recording a BBC6 session at Maida Vale Studios, receiving support from Gilles Peterson, KEXP, Soulection and many others and playing some of the best stages in the world including SXSW, Supersonic Jazz and ESNS.
