There is no way around John Carroll Kirby, producer, composer and keyboardist from LA, in contemporary jazz. His productions pay homage to a soul-infected jazz that wanders funkily and cheerfully through the genres. Thus, each of his numerous albums is dedicated to different focuses: Whether it's the blend of jazz and exotica on My Garden, quiet piano sounds on Conflict, jazz-fusion ensemble playing on Septet or the more electronic approach on Ancestral.

On the LP Blowout, released this year, he combines his dreamy, playful jazz sound with Caribbean calypso and small excursions into the world of electronica. The album is dedicated to "failed utopias" and John Carroll manages to make the theme sound life-affirming and as gently melancholic as a tropical sunset. Blowout was written during a stay in Costa Rica, where he produced an episode of his travelogue series Kirby's Gold with the Kawe Calypso Band.

John Carroll Kirby is not only incessantly busy with his own productions, but also a sought-after collaborator and has worked with Yves Tumor and Liv.e as well as Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus, to name but a few.
