In Italy, March 21 is now also a national day of remembrance for the innocent victims of the mafia. There is hardly any awareness of this in our country. We want to change that with this tour and draw more attention to the innocent victims of the mafia and violence.
Every year on March 22, the WEISSE RING (White Ring) celebrates Victims of Crime Day to draw attention to people who have been harmed by crime and violence. We want to build on this with this tour.
Baden-Württemberg is the federal state with the highest density of mafiosi. According to official figures, at least 181 members of Italian mafia organizations lived in the state in 2021, a new high. Many are well integrated and have been living in Germany for decades. Jungbusch was long known as a retreat for the mafia, but today the 'ndrangheta has built up extensive structures, especially in Stuttgart, and is closely networked with the Italian community as well as with business, politics, culture and sport. However, new mafia structures are also establishing themselves in many other places and existing ones are becoming more entrenched. Although the Italian mafia is so strong in terms of numbers, there are few state agencies that deal with mafia-related proceedings. Successes in the fight against the mafia are usually the result of investigations in Italy and not the result of German authorities.
Interestingly, in 2014 there was an extensive exhibition by the REM on the subject of "TAT/ORT - (un)secret traces of the Mafia", but the topic of Mannheim and the Mafia was left out!
On this tour, we will visit four places in Jungbusch that are closely associated with the victims of violence. This tour will also deal with the topic of crime in general and the question: How safe is Jungbusch?
