LAST-MINUTE CHANGE:
Lukas Sternath unfortunately has to cancel the concert due to illness. However, Igor Levit will step in as soloist on the piano at short notice. The program remains unchanged.
Schumann initially described his work for piano and orchestra as a "fantasia" before working it into a three-movement solo concerto a few years later. The music is characterized by dancing momentum, virtuoso dialogues and delicate cantilenas, sometimes chamber music-like, sometimes symphonic. Béla Bartók was a neo-tonalist of his time who managed to shape an entire generation with his individual musical language. His early orchestral music is indebted to Richard Strauss, and the dance scene from "Ariadne" could even have been the inspiration for the lively, light character of his second orchestral suite.
