Schumann initially described his work for piano and orchestra as a "fantasy", before developing it into a three-movement solo concerto a few years later. The music is characterized by dancing momentum, virtuoso dialogues and delicate cantilenas, sometimes chamber music-like, sometimes symphonic. Béla Bartók was a neo-tonalist of his time who managed to shape an entire generation with his individual musical language. His early orchestral music is indebted to Richard Strauss, and the dance scene from "Ariadne" could even have been the inspiration for the lively, light character of his second orchestral suite.
