Xi Xi (1937 - 2022) was one of the most influential Chinese-language authors. Her novel My City (1979) left its mark on generations. Fast-paced, polyphonic and multi-faceted, it tells the story of Hong Kong's booming 1970s before the British territory was returned to the People's Republic of China in 1997. Sinologist Karin Betz was awarded the prestigious Helmut M. Braem Translator's Prize for her virtuoso translation of the cult book.

Karin Betz translates from English and Chinese, including Jin Yong, Nobel Prize for Literature winner Mo Yan and Peace Prize winner Liao Yiwu. She was a visiting professor for Poetics of Translation at the Free University of Berlin in 2021/22. In addition to Meine Stadt, her translation of Yu Yoyo's short story collection Invisible Cats was published in 2023.
