Halberstadt in the summer of 1990: Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt) and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) have known and loved each other since childhood. Rather by chance, they find the GDR's millions in an old mine shaft, which have been stored there to rot away.
The three of them smuggle out rucksacks full of money. Together with their friends and neighbors, they develop an ingenious system to exchange the now worthless money for goods and cheat the onrushing Westerners and their capitalism. Because if you're a bit clever now, this summer could not only be a great adventure, but also the final turning point in their lives.

Natja Brunckhorst was able to draw on true events for her summer comedy about a group of friends who, together with their neighbors, want to stop the triumphal march of capitalism: Millions of marks from the GDR migrated into underground vaults near Halberstadt for the currency union - a total of almost 400 tons of banknotes. It is certain that money was stolen from these tunnels. To this day, nobody knows exactly how much was actually involved.
Natja Brunckhorst developed her story from this source: a humorous adventure in a time when anything seemed possible. It is about money and justice - and about what really counts in life: Friendship and family.
