KIRU was made from a screenplay by Kaneto Shindo. Shortly before his father's death, young Shingo learns the truth about his tragic origins: his mother murdered the mistress of her feudal lord and was subsequently executed by her lover - his father. As a master swordsman, Shindo enters the service of a hapless clan lord. Images full of beauty and an evocative soundtrack accompany the fateful life of Shindo, who, despite his pure heart and good intentions, comes to realize the futility of all his actions. As in KEN and KENKI, which together with KIRU form an unofficial trilogy, Raizo Ichikawa, one of Japan's biggest film stars at the time, plays the leading role.
