Rafael Gutiérrez Vélez began his training in Mérida, Mexico, with the renowned Cuban pianist Alberto Álvarez. At the age of 14, he moved to London to study at the Purcell School of Music with Tatiana Sarkissova and Ilana Davies. He then continued his studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Elena Richter. He completed his master's degree at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart under Prof. Dr. Peter Nagy. In 2024, he expanded his artistic career as conductor of the Göppingen Chamber Orchestra.

At the DAI, Rafael Gutiérrez Vélez performs works by Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev, among others. Prokofiev began work on Sonata No. 6 in 1939, and although it is considered the first of his three war sonatas, he began it after the murder of his friend and colleague Vsevolod Meyerhold and his wife. The sonata thus appears more as a criticism of a brutal and repressive government. Gutiérrez Vélez also plays pieces by Maurice Ravel, Frédéric Chopin and Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin.
