KunstBewusst: Becker & Chargesheimer. Kölner Ansichten. Yilmaz Dziewior im Gespräch mit dem Fotografen Boris Becker

In the organizer's words:

What is it all about?

On May 19, 2024, the Cologne photographer Chargesheimer, whose real name is Karl Heinz Hargesheimer, would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, the Museum Ludwig is presenting around fifty of his works. Chargesheimer became famous for his photo books "Cologne intime" and "Unter Krahnenbäumen", which impressively document everyday life in Cologne. The exhibition features 43 photographs from these books, which reflect his unobstructed view of urban life. Chargesheimer has also been experimenting with photographic and photochemical processes since the 1940s, creating painterly photographic works of art in the process.

In a keynote lecture, Cologne-based photo artist Boris Becker will present a selection of his Cologne motifs in an associative context with selected photographs by Chargesheimer. Becker contextualizes the analogies in his working method and that of Chargesheimer against his biographical and family background and outlines a personal image of the city of Cologne in the post-war period and the 80s and 90s of the 20th century based on a number of pictorial motifs from the art, music and literature scene.

In a subsequent artist talk with museum director Dr. Yilmaz Dziewior, the correspondences between Chargesheimer's and Becker's work will be explored in greater depth.
