LA MASCHERA DEL DEMONIO The Hour When Dracula Comes Mario Bava Italy 1960 35 mm ital. OmdU 87'
Not for the faint-hearted! Crucifixions, torture scenes, nail masks - Bava's directorial debut is at times grotesquely violent, yet interwoven with the passion and eroticism typical of the genre, including languorous glances and billowing cleavages. The cult film takes place on two time levels: The frame story is set in the 17th century. Princess Asa (Barbara Steele) and her lover are crucified on charges of witchcraft. 200 years later, Asa - now a revenant - succeeds in wreaking havoc and taking possession of her descendant Katia (also played by Barbara Steele). With its chiaroscuro lighting, LA MASCHERA DEL DEMONIO triggered a wave of Italian gothic horror films and is considered an early highlight of the genre.
