This year marks 35 years of German reunification. However, the relationship between East and West continues to be hotly debated - often loudly and with little added insight, including recriminations. One person who provides an objective and at the same time vivid understanding is the well-known sociologist Steffen Mau, professor at Humboldt University in Berlin. In this edition of the event series "Let's talk about", he talks to Futurium Director Stefan Brandt about his findings.
Clichés about the other part of Germany persist even 35 years after the Peaceful Revolution and reunification. Differences in various areas can even be statistically proven. Are there really two countries in one? Has the unification project even failed? Berlin sociologist Steffen Mau, who grew up in the GDR himself, has been studying the subject for years. He says that the democratic potential of the protest movement at the time - grassroots democratic approaches, for example - was underutilized. His contributions to research and debate are factually sound, precise and at the same time vivid. They offer new perspectives and unusual suggestions.
Together with Futurium Director Stefan Brandt, Steffen Mau discusses the realities and sensitivities in East and West Germany: what unites them and what makes them different, prejudices and facts, the East German path from the Peaceful Revolution to the present day. And, of course, it is also about the future: will we ever grow together completely? Is the difference perhaps also an opportunity to find new paths together? What can we learn from the protest movement in the GDR for a common future? Join us in discussing and developing ideas for a cliché-free coexistence in a common Germany.
In our series of talks, Stefan Brandt, Director of the Futurium, dedicates each talk to an extraordinary guest. All of the interviewees have a special ability to shape our future due to their work.
In contrast to the usual talks, the time here is dedicated exclusively to one guest and one future topic in order to deepen approaches to solutions and point out connections.
