With the new, playful work "Session" by renowned Italian designer Martino Gamper, the central hall at Haus der Kunst becomes a new, constantly evolving social space, a place of movement and encounter.

Martino Gamper (b. 1971 in Merano, Italy) is internationally known for his groundbreaking work 100 Chairs in 100 Days, in which he systematically began collecting discarded chairs in 2006, then spent 100 days redesigning each of the chairs to change its character and/or functionality. Gamper's artistic practice challenges the boundaries between design and fine art and includes exhibition design, interior design, special commissions, and the design of products for the international furniture industry. He is constantly searching for new ways to use and activate design in our everyday lives. His work moves between art, design, performance and curation.

As artist-in-residence, Martino Gamper will design a series of newly designed chairs, an evolution of his acclaimed long-term project 100 Chairs in 100 Days. During the term, the chairs will be reconfigured by visitors* and the staff as they choose - to gather, rest, and play. The central hall is thus transformed into a lively, ever-changing social space. The reconfigurations will be based on rules Gamper establishes at the beginning of the project, using choreography to change the appearance of the space from week to week. In addition to the furniture, Gamper will also create a lighting design that will transform the atmosphere of the central hall from an area normally used as a passageway to a place of gathering.

According toMartino Gamper, "For the House of Art, the furniture will be made in a variety of ways, including artisanal and industrial processes and using a wide range of materials. The chairs will be experimental, functional, but imperfect. They are not products but means to explore sitting as a sculptural object."

The project illustrates the path toward new forms of participation and learning that Haus der Kunst 2023 has embarked upon. It is a collaborative project between Martino Gamper, the curatorial team, and the arts education team at Haus der Kunst.
