Flying Chicks

Juanita Arango, better known as Flying Chicks, is a Berlin-based singer-songwriter from Bogotá, Colombia. Flying Chicks' soft and acoustic melodies are suitable for first communions, figure skating competitions, beauty pageants, retirement parties, exhibitions of cursed objects and fishing trips.

"I want to love, and I love". A pious wish and a declaration of intent in one. Welcome to the debut album from fastmusic. After the pre-release of the double single "wow/funk in the kitchen (dream)" last year, "I want to love, and I love" is finally an album by Leipzig-based artist fastmusic on the outernational label you trust: Fun In The Church.

"Carousel keeps on turning, I'm sitting inside and try to calm down, The party isn't over, I wonder why." In the album opener, fastmusic describes the world as a carousel. But we have definitely landed on the slowest merry-go-round in the world.

The music on the album sounds like Shuggie Otis or Timmy Thomas, if only because of the rhythm machines that are switched on consistently from the third song "Superman", but it also sounds like Spacemen 3 because of the decided deceleration and the shoegaze romanticism, and it sounds like Mali Blues because of the harmonies and the warmth that flows out of the speakers despite the radically minimalist sound design - which is somewhat reminiscent of Anna Domino.

Above all, fastmusic doesn't sound remotely retro, despite all the last-century references mentioned. Instead, it sounds more like someone who, in addition to music, is also interested in herbal medicine, mechanical engineering and meditation techniques from the last 5,000 years.

So the band name can definitely be read as a juxtaposition. Because the hectic pace of these times is something that completely bounces off fastmusic, both aesthetically and philosophically.

Whether it's about super shoppers in the ironic consumer hero tune "superman", about first world problems and the associated kitchen psychology in "funk in the kitchen" or about expressive dancers in the sunlight ("dancing in the sun"). Live and let live is at the top of the agenda on this album.

"Digging in every little bag to search, something to lighten up my cigarette, don't have anything to say, but wine, I don't have anyone to blame this time", it says in "it's ok" and then later "It's okay, Lina, don't need to know, what is right and what is wrong, enjoy!" If you can enjoy things as slowly as fastmusic, you certainly won't find any reason to put other people down! Knowing that enjoyment today is consistently interrupted by constant self-dramatization and voluntarily involuntary reporting: "Could you smile just for a moment, I would like to take a picture, you know it's just for the story, because I like to tell stories," he says in "pictures", for example.

On the cover we see the artist brushing his wig, the eye area covered by an arm. In the end, you probably don't need to know any more about fastmusic. Because as much as Last Century may sound in the year 2024, this album is actually about the music! And, and this is where it gets esoteric: about its healing powers!

As far as myth-making, personality shows and brand-building or the fulfillment of any shock values are concerned: no way! In the end, fastmusic - like all of us - is just looking for its place in the world! And unlike the seriously insecure majority out there, he doesn't see the point in being put under any kind of pressure! At least the artist persona in these heart-warming songs seems to feel that way.
