The two Lord Mayors Georg Kronawitter (1972-1978, 1984-1993) and Erich Kiesl (1978-1984) shaped two decades of Munich city politics after the 1972 Olympics. In a public evening event in the Law Library in City Hall, companions and political leaders will discuss these important years in Munich.
Despite their tragic outcome, the 1972 Summer Olympics opened the gates to the world. Munich and its metropolitan area were able to develop further thanks to the underground and suburban railroad mass transit systems. This posed new challenges for urban policy. The city should not just be a "living space for the wealthy". Under the SPD mayor Georg Kronawitter, new goals were formulated. It was about "more green", local recreation and a cultural offering close to the city.
The bid submitted in May 1977 to host the 1983 International Garden Show marked the birth of the Westpark. The construction of the "Gasteig" - a cultural center that was to unite high culture and popular education under one roof - was approved by the city council in 1976 after fierce controversy. It was inaugurated in 1983 by the new mayor Erich Kiesl (CSU), who had been in office since 1978. During his time in office, discussions about the direction of local public transport and the question of "Who owns public space?" became increasingly important. After all, questions of political participation and social co-determination have moved city leaders and civil society throughout his time in office. Protests against rent speculation, but also citizens' initiatives for the preservation of traditional district structures and against major projects - such as the Nord marshalling yard - found support in broad sections of the population.
